Add From Server

Plugin Homepage: http://dd32.id.au/wordpress-plugins/add-from-server/

I took the challenge: http://foolswisdom.com/media-library-and-wordpress-plugin-challenge/

WordPress 2.5 includes a new Media manager, However, It only knows about files which have been uploaded via the WordPress interface, Not files which have been uploaded via other means(eg, FTP).

So i present, “Add From Server” a WordPress plugin which allows you to browse the filesystem on the webserver and copy any files into the WordPress uploads system, Once “imported” it’ll be treated as any other uploaded file, and you can access it via the Media Library.

You may download the first-version plugin here: http://dd32.id.au/files/add-from-server.zip
I expect its got a number of bugs in it, And it’ll need some more work on it in the coming weeks, But it works!

  1. Hi, this plugin is a nice feature. I was wondering if it could be modified to reach out to other servers and copy files from there to your Uploads directory? The reason is to bring docs that have been created in other online systems (zoho, Google Docs, etc.) into your WordPress blog quickly and easily.
Thanks for having such a great idea and for putting in the work on the plugin!
    David

  2. I just installed Add From Server on Worpress 2.6. Is it tested with 2.6? Doesn’t work for me:
After selecting photos to be added to the library I get the message
“…has been added to Media library”, and two thumbnails appear in the uploads folder, too.
I can’t see the images, though, and when inserting a photo to a post, the link is broken.
    I’d appreciate your help.

  3. I think this plugin is a very nice addition to wordpress. But the bugs are bugging me, maybe I’ll use this when its already bug free!. Anyway, thanks for the information.

  4. Hi. I started using this great plugin just before the upgrade to WordPress 2.7. Since the upgrade, I am having trouble using version 2.0 of the Add From Server plugin.

The img src url is using the year/month of the post instead of the appropriate folder name where the pictures are filed. Whether I import and then insert a picture into an old post or a new post, the img src url will incorrectly include the year/month for the respective post.

I have de-activated and re-activated the plugin to no avail.

The problem appears to occur during the import stage because when I go to an old post where an image was already imported, I can insert the image a 2nd time and the correct url is used.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me some suggestions.

    Thank you.

    1. Not sure its a bug you’re hit or not.

Upload a image to a older post in WordPress, and it’ll be filtered into a per-month folder based upon the posts date, The plugin does the same.. Or are you saying, the URL is of the posts date, but the file is uploaded to a folder based on todays date?

      1. Thank you for the reply DD32. I’m not sure I clearly understand your question. Hopefully, this explanation helps:
        1. I upload images to a folder called ‘photos’ using ftp
        2. I create a new post, select ‘add an image’, followed by ‘add from server’, pick the image I want from the ‘photos’ folder and then ‘import’ it into the Gallery / Media Library.
        3. I go to either the ‘Gallery’ tab or the ‘Media Library’ tab, select the image, and ‘insert’ it into the post.
        4. The html code that is inserted in the post incorrectly uses the path /uploads/2009/01/image.jpg instead of /uploads/photos/image.jpg

If I go to the ‘Media Library’ and select an image I had imported with ‘Add from Server’ prior to the WP 2.7 upgrade, the html code that is inserted is correct. However, any image I have imported with ‘Add from Server’ since the WP 2.7 upgrade, the html code that is inserted in incorrect, as I described in step 4 above.

Looking forward to your thoughts. Thanks.

  5. Thanks for this plugin – I just had to import more than 1000 pictures as I moved to WordPress as CMS — without this plugin, it would have been a mess!

  6. I think you need to mention that this plug-in works only with WordPress 2.8. One needs to upgrade to have this plug-in to function effectively.

    1. Probably. But i’m NEVER going to support any versions which are not the current stable release, Even if you have a problem with a newer version.

  7. Once an upgrade happens, all new plug-ins must be made compatible with the new version as well the older versions. I find it strange that this is not the case.

    1. “must” is incorrect. “may” is the right wording.

supporting older versions of wordpress is the authors discretion, Its not worth my time, You may use an older (potentially buggy) version with an outdated release if you so please.
